My favorite soccer team Arsenal, 2 days ago, bought up from Real Madrid Mesut Ozil... The German national is widely considered to be the best number 10 position player in the world nowadays so he should prove to be great as Fabregas used to be.

That is mesmerizing.

He passed the ball to the intended player...way to go...

So nice that it posted thrice.
I turned the other two into drafts since I can't seem to fully delete them.

I'm an Arsenal fan too, and boy did this make me giggly. I was glued to twitter and the bbc all through 2nd of Sept. Wish we also got a striker though.... I don't really want to see Bendtner again, but chances are we will.

As a soccer fan, I'll enjoy watching him play. As a Spurs fan, I'm terrified.

We got Willian though!
But this season looks like it might be a wide open chase for the title.

As an Arsenal fan I'd love to believe you're right, but I have a feeling we're actually going to see a wide-open race for second and to close the gap on United. It seems everyone's forgotten that they won the title by 9 points last season: that's a huuuuge gap in PL terms.

Because of Ozil, now I understand why I take sooooo long for wenger to sign a player.
And ya, Arsenal really get lucky this time.

What's your feelings on Bale leaving?

I'm not too bothered by Bendtner as backup. He's a good, solid, hardworking attacker, even though he's never lived up to his potential. Still young, too. Clearly, he still has a chance to fulfil expectations, although we can't count on it.
If you have a look at Drogba's record, it's interesting to see that before he started doing well at Marseille, and moved to Chelsea, he was older than Bendtner is now.

Yea, they had a relatively easy time last season, but with the Fat Spanish Waiter gone from Chelsea, I hope we can mount a real challenge on United. But then again, they just got Fellani, and they will only get better under Moyes.

It's interesting how Gareth Bale really affected the transfer market. If Tottenham didn't sale Bale to Madrid, I think Ozil would still be there.

"Fat Spanish Waiter"
I know a lot of people repeat that without really thinking about it, but is there any way at all in which it's not, well, vile? Amongst other implications is that being Manuel from Fawlty Towers is the highest thing any Spaniard could ever achieve, what with them all being stupid.
Sorry, but I've never thought there's any place for that kind of thing in football even as a passing gag.

Ya.
Not only Ozil, to be honest.
Lamella, Eriksen, everyone that tottenham bought.
Honestly since the end of the season I can see Bale in Madrid, but Tottenham waits till his price balooning

Willian!
That guy is awesome.
Also, don't forget liverpool. They got really strong start this season.

Go Gunners!
I really hope that Cazorla isn't demoted to the bench as I very much enjoy watching him play. It's like his feet have a little gravity well and the ball just orbits them.
These two together should be a great deal of fun.

Yes they have. Funny, they look better without Suarez, haha.

I don't think it's all that vile. I only say it in jest.
When Benitez was hired, even though he was not really any of the fans' first choice, I wanted to support him. But god, his tatics, and team selection, were just terrible; at least for Chelsea.
I hope he does well at Napoli though; not like I have an deep-seated, undying hate towards him.

Ya.
Sturridge is really awesome there. It's a shame chelsea let him go.
![]() 09/04/2013 at 09:48 |

Yea, a real shame. I don't know why they never gave him the chance to play as a proper striker.

Hmm
I think it's because Torres.
Mr Abramovich is squeeezing his 50million pound toy as hard as he can..

Haha.....This is Torres. His squeaker is broken.

"I don't think it's all that vile. I only say it in jest."
I get the impression that the vast majority of those who use the phrase haven't really thought about it - including you. Still, though, it's no more than a step or two away from making monkey noises at players with dark skin.
To start with, the whole thing is based on outward physical appearance. Then, the suggestion is that this particular outward physical appearance means that those who have it are comically stupid, lazy, and useless. Finally, there's the conclusion that Benitez cannot be a good manager as a result, whatever he actually achieves.
I doubt that's what you actually meant to imply, but it's what that phrase really says.
Of course, there's still lots of similar unintentional prejudice in football although little to no actual conscious racism. You only ever hear light-skinned players described as 'cultured' or 'intelligent' or even 'creative', for example, while dark-skinned players get praised for physical characteristics like strength and pace.
![]() 09/04/2013 at 10:21 |
|
The phrase has nothing to do with the color of his skin or his nationality. If he was Dutch, Canadian, Jamaican, Indian, Japanese, the phrase would change to reflect that. It's quite far from making racial taunts at dark-skinned players.
In my experience, waiters have not been dumb or lazy, but quite the contrary. This is why I don't think the phrase is that vile.
I agree with your last point. Often times, guys like Walcott and Lennon are rarely praised for their creative play; usually there's just a comment about the pace they have, as if they're a one trick pony.

"The phrase has nothing to do with the color of his skin or his nationality."
Sorry, but no. It's a reference to Manuel from Fawlty Towers, who was a racist seventies comic stereotype of the lazy stupid 'dago'. Pretty mild by seventies standards, but that's not saying much.

Yea, Podolski injury is looming on for 3 months further... He tore his hamstring, not just strained it, sadly enough...
But Giroud is developing excellently and Ramsey with Walcott are showing great promise

I'm optimistic about it. He's a great player, but I think Madrid overpayed to get him. Because of that, Spurs had a lot of money to re-build the squad, and I think they did it well... but they'll need some time to come together. By the end of the season they should be good, with enough depth in case someone gets hurt.
The question is, do they have anyone capable of creating magic? Seeing the pass or shot that nobody else sees, turning losses into draws and draws into wins. Bale was that player, so it'll be interesting to see who steps up this year.

Yea, I almost choked when I saw what they paid. Good question though.

Haha....It hasn't quite the dream return everyone envisaged, but it hasn't been bad. The Super Cup loss to Bayern was heartbreaking though.
